I've mentioned before that every little milestone in the world of special needs is HUGE! From brushing hair, trying new foods, getting a full nights sleep, or saying a new word. This past week Nolan reached a milestone I honestly wasn't sure we'd ever get to. Well, that's a little dramatic. I knew we would get there but I didn't think it would be this soon.
The kids and I were at Spencers around lunch time one day this week running around on the playground. The girls were swinging and climbing the jungle gym while Nolan enjoyed running back and forth between the two playgrounds. That meant I too was running back and forth! About the 20th time of doing this I started to walk because I knew he was just going for the see saw every time. Climb on, up and down and few times, then off and running back to the swing. Once I got the routine I wasn't wasting my energy anymore with the running.
One particular time he ran to the seesaw he went out of my sight. I got a little worried and picked up my pace. When I got to the see saw he was no where to be seen. I freaked out and scanned the area - nothing. Right before I went into full blown panic mode I saw the bathroom door open and heard something. I went over to look thinking surely it couldn't be Nolan but hoping it was. Sure enough it was him! Not only was he in the bathroom by himself but was actually going to the bathroom . . . on the toilet! To spare the details this boy is officially fully potty trained!
Of course I went CRAZY! If anyone saw a woman with tears on her face jumping up and down at Spencers playground, no worries, it was just me. I couldn't be more proud in that moment. We have tried to conquer this on and off for 4 or 5 years. There is no secret to how we did it. Just perseverance and LOTS and LOTS of patience. In the end though he just did it in his own time! No amount of pushing and prodding and bribing made it happen. Trust me, there was a lot of that though! I swear I must have prayed for patience at some point in my younger years because this kid teaches me that it pays off all the time! He never ceases to amaze us and surprises us all the time with what he has learned!
